Reviews
There’s a bit of “front-loading” happening this month in terms of scheduling. As I’m writing this, the virtual Falcon Ridge Folk Festival is in full swing, having started streaming on Thursday, July 30th.
It continues through Sunday, August 2nd, 1:30 – 4:30pm each day at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPU31W7iLcY
A pre-recorded “best of” The Lounge was shown on Thursday afternoon. At the actual festival, after setting up the Acoustic Live booth, even with help from booth staffers Dan and Phyllis Budne, I have usually been too exhausted to make it to many of the acts, so seeing the video was a treat.
Live streaming of song swaps and showcases followed on Thursday evening.
On Friday, July 31st, Nerissa and Katrina Nields opened with a kid’s segment which included a song about animals followed by a song about wearing protective masks. The sisters modeled their attractive collection both before and during the song.
The Emerging Artist Showcase was presented with pre-recorded videos. These were all of pristine quality, both aurally and visually. There were only 11 artists selected instead of the usual 25. In order of appearance they were: John Beacher, Shanna in a Dress, Indian Summer Jars, Randy Lewis Brown, The Real Sarahs, Karyn Ann, The Levins, Lynne Hanson, Andy Baker, Buffalo Rose and Kala Farnham.
Everyone was terrific, but if we had to pick three favorites they’d be John Beacher, Indian Summer Jars and Lynne Hanson.
Beacher is a good singer but his guitar work is mind-blowing. In the second of his two allotted numbers, a clinic in funk, his shift into a looped bass line was so subtle, it took me a half-minute to realize what was happening. His set was sheer perfection.
Indian Summer Jars, a trio of one male (Jason Whetstone) and two female (Sarah Fiore and Jennifer Hara) singer/musicians with a backing percussionist, were mesmerizing. Their harmonies were a masterful blend and I couldn’t help noticing Sarah’s adroit lead guitar.
While the first two were new to me, I had been briefly acquainted with my third pick, Lynn Hanson, as half of the Canadian duo The LYNNeS (with Lynn Miles) Staying behind her mic might have hurt her presentation slightly, but the power in her songs and her vocals seemed to epitomize the grit she brings from Canada. I might just be a sucker for anything Canadian, but I think Lynn Hanson is special.
The afternoon proceeded with a brief one-song “Friday Night” song swap with Vance Gilbert, Susan Werner (insert me genuflecting here), Mary Gautier and Matt Nakoa.
Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovians concluded the day’s streaming with their iconic dance tent performance and clips of their audience parading before the mainstage at night holding colorful, battery-lit umbrella “jellyfish.”
If only considered as a public relations event (and they’re so much more), these videos are going to create a lot of excitement, especially for fans who have never been to Falcon Ridge. When the festival opens again, physically, we expect to see record crowds.
Newport Folk Festival is holding its Newport Folk Revival Weekend from July 31st to August 2nd online at https://newportfolk.org/revival/. Newport Folk Revival Radio is streaming music each day from 11am – 7:30pm on several outlets, including WFUV-FM. There are two pre-recorded concerts, Mavis 80 on July 31st and Our Voices Together, an original film by Josh Goleman on Sunday, August 2 at 8:30pm
One livestreamed concert will be held on August 1st at 8:30pm, Deer Tick & Friends with Leon Bridges, Robert Ellis, Sharon Van Etten, The Tallest Man On Earth, and Courtney Marie Andrews. The price to watch is $20 Adv / $25 Day of Show with additional fees
At the risk of repeating myself ad nauseam, Sundays with Suzie continues to consistently present high quality shows. A recent show with Jonatha Brooke as guest artist was one of the best stay-at-home streams so far. Werner and Brooke should do more together; either touring (when permissable) or recording or both. Each performs the other’s songs brilliantly and their voices blend like honey and tea
